Workshop: Creating a financial market for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Europe

Time: 14.00-15.30 Sunday May 29

Intellectual property rights (IPR) have reached a higher level of financial and strategic visibility over the last years. Becoming aware of the change in corporate value, the strategic use of IPR has shifted from being exploited only internally to an increasing external exploitation. However, many companies still have major difficulties in successfully conducting IPR-based transactions. The IPR market lacks transparency regarding essential market information.

The challenge today is to raise awareness, understanding and willingness to develop the financial system and products that will capture the value of IPR as new asset class. A currently actively discussed possible solution is the creation of a financial market for IPR. A single market could promote the circulation of knowledge and innovation avoiding the fragmentation between national markets.

In the course of the workshop, the CIP Forum 2011 participants will be given the opportunity to contribute their opinions and expectations and therefore to be actively involved in the study on creating such a market. In particular, the workshop will cover the following key topics:

-  The creation of an organized marketplace: selling vs. licensing (key differences, risks and potential, which model is the more sustainable one?)

- Based on the discussion on 1), success factors of market types and characteristics necessary to attract potential actors to the market
