Dear CIP FORUM participant,

Thank you once again for making CIP FORUM, not only the meeting arena for uncovering and discussing the knowledge economy, but a true pleasure to participate in!

From the interesting and engaging speaker sessions and roundtables, to the informal meetings and chats outside the conference rooms, to the social events at the end of each day, we hope that you enjoyed yourselves as much as we did. No matter what the setting or agenda, we felt that the forum was characterized by a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere, with interesting knowledge exchange and new bonds and networks at every turn. We would like to thank you for your contribution to this, and hope that you enjoyed your visit to Gothenburg and Western Sweden, and that you will return to visit us many times in the future.

An important factor in this has been the dedicated and committed participation of the Master’s level students from the CSE, ICM, and GIBBS educations, whom we would like to thank especially.

As we have noted in the past and during this forum as well, CIP FORUM is more than an event, and will not end simply because we have all returned to our various corners of the world. The connections that we built in these four days, between individuals, between regions and stakeholder categories, will hopefully link us together for years to come.

Your opinion of CIP FORUM 2011 is indeed important to us. Please respond to our evaluation by using the following link: Evaluation CIP FORUM 2011

Best regards/
On behalf of the organization committee,

Eva Henricsson
Project Manager, CIP FORUM 2011

Venue: School of Business, Economics and Law, University of Gothenburg
Wednesday June 1: 08:30-17:00

CIP FORUM gathers a unique combination of international thought leaders from government, business and academia. The event does not only establish a community for knowledge transfer and development, but it also offers physical venues for participants – so-called roundtable projects- to sit down in private to discuss and determine the way forward in The New Wealth of Nations together with other actors, networks, clusters or important persons. CIP FORUM therefore equips its participants with the frameworks, capabilities and tools needed for advancing participants’ knowledge-based business.

From the experience of the previous CIP FORUM events, we know that new insights and ideas emerge during inspiring talks in plenary sessions, specialization themes and workshops. We therefore see it being crucial to offer the opportunity for participants to reserve and set up private meetings either for their internal networks or together with other participants.

Tuesday May 31 at 09.00-10.15

What does the wealth of nations mean in a knowledge economy and what is the role of the national government? In an age of multi-national companies and born global start-ups, can nations really develop and appropriate wealth in the same way? When valuable knowledge is held by stakeholders across multiple borders how is the strength of the nation state affected and how does it differ in developed, emerging, and developing economies? Will IP determine the haves and have-nots in the knowledge economy? Can we count on market forces to balance the role of IP in wealth and welfare creation effectively?

I would not be mistaken if I said that being an entrepreneur means identifying the challenges you have in your life and finding creative ways to solve them. That does not necessarily mean starting your own business.

However, the role of an entrepreneur in the knowledge economy is to be able to identify fundamental building blocks of nascent technologies. As Sean Parker put it, “it’s technology, not business or government, that’s the real driving force behind large-scale societal shifts.” Sean, for example, sees his role as “re-architecting society”. This surely requires being erudite and able to see a holistic view: how can these technologies be integrated to supplement each other? What value will this bring to consumers? Will they pay for it? The questions can pour endlessly but it is the journey of finding the answers what matters.

It takes a lot of resilience to be an entrepreneur. A characteristic to bounce back is a major one, especially in the new economy where all kind of complexities have to be tackled and solved.

Joins us at CIP Forum 2011 to share your thoughts on what entrepreneurial mindsets are defining this decade.
